Benefits of BDSM: What Can It Do For You?
POSTED ON March 31, 2016

As it turns out, the benefits of BDSM could be more than any of us quite realized. While bondage, domination, and sadomasochism have seen steadily growing acceptance in mainstream culture, it’s perfectly natural for people to wonder just what everyone’s getting out of this seemingly somewhat scary sexual phenomenon. The truth is that with a trusted and consenting partner, there’s nothing at all to fear – and as it stands, perhaps quite a bit to gain!

The simple fact is research has shown that engaging in BDSM can offer health perks that extend past sexual satisfaction, including one factor more important than ever in our extremely fast-paced society: stress reduction.

A study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine indicated that people who participate in BDSM play with their partners may feel less anxious and more secure in their relationships than those who do not. 902 people who engage in BDSM were interviewed, in addition to 434 who do not. Of the people who enjoyed BDSM and related play, certain mental traits were shared, such as being less neurotic, more extraverted, open to new experiences, and conscientious, as well as less sensitive to rejection.

But what’s the reason for all this stress relief?

Yes, there is an actual, scientific reason, and it’s quite similar to a phenomenon most everyone – interest in BDSM notwithstanding – has heard of: runner’s high. Submissive partners report a relaxed, peaceful sense of mind called “subspace,” while dominants experience their own endorphin-filled version, called “topspace,” which is attended with an increased sense of control and success.

In a different study published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior in 2008, saliva samples were taken of people engaging in BDSM before, during, and after the act. In both submissive and dominant partners, lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol were reported after participating in BDSM play. Another interesting discovery was that even during especially physically trying BDSM play, submissive partners still reported less stress.

Benefits of BDSM

We’ve learned that the benefits of BDSM can include stress reduction, but can it actually increase intimacy?

The answer to this question is, generally speaking, yes. Exploring each other’s fetishes is an important part of any relationship; someone’s willingness to explore and act on their partner’s desires is of the utmost importance when establishing and growing that connection. Not only that, but the intense level of communication leads to a greater sense of trust in one another, the true foundation of honest intimacy.

What’s important to remember, however, is that if you don’t already have BDSM tendencies, the benefits of BDSM might not apply to you. The activities of BDSM themselves don’t necessarily provide stress relief, but actually engaging can lead to greater sexual fulfillment, which naturally reduces stress. (Kind of like orgasms in general!)

That all said, the benefits of BDSM can be accessed in a seemingly endless plethora of ways. Browse our entire collection of fetish toys to find the perfect introduction to exploring your interest in BDSM, and check out a few of our favorites below.
